I really liked The Great Gatsby movie. There were many appealing elements that went into this movie like the music and special effects. I also enjoyed it because it helped clear up the confusion and frustration that The Great Gatsby book left me with.
I always notice the music in movies and I really liked the music in The Great Gatsby. It was very cool how the music was both from the 1920s but also from the current time period. Energetic swinging jazz was intertwined with the rap and pop we are familiar with today. The song, "Young and Beautiful" was also played periodically in the background, sometimes quickly and sometimes drawn out and longingly. I fell in love with this song before I had even seen The Great Gatsby but now that I have seen the movie I can appreciate the song more. The lyrics really fit with some of the major themes in The Great Gatsby.
I also loved the special effects and setting of the movie. The environment that the characters were living in was just so different than the one I am used to and it was so vividly portrayed that it was almost as if I was in the same room as Gatsby himself. My favorite scene was probably when we first meet Daisy and Jordan as they are sitting on the couch. The way the white curtains dance around the room and just the airiness of it all is magical. It was like a dream that made it so life could go on in perfect happiness forever.
I also really enjoyed the music in The Great Gatsby movie. I agree that the combination of both modern and 1920's-era music was very cool to hear and added to the movie greatly. The scenes were quite extravagant though very fitting for this movie. They really added life to the luxurious way that Gatsby lived. (Oh my gosh, the scene with Daisy and Jordan with those curtains was probably my favorite too!)
ReplyDeleteI have to both agree and disagree with you, Cora. I agree that the music was spot on. It perfectly embodied the crazy party atmosphere that the film was aiming for, and that the book had as well. However, I absolutely hated the special effects elements. The movie did seem like a dream, but to me that was incredibly distracting and annoying. I understand what Luhrmann was trying to accomplish with this effect, but to me it was irritating. It made it seem like this really WAS Nick's imagination, which was off-putting to me because of the fact that he is in a Sanitarium. To be honest, the music was probably the only part of the movie that I could say I really enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the movie clears up the frustration and confusion of The Great Gatsby! But I also believe that the frustration and confusion helped me love the book. I feel that the mysteries of the book are a small part that makes this book a classic. The movie does hold some mystery but I thought the book used it better.
ReplyDeleteIt’s great that you were able to make a personal connection with a song that is used throughout the movie! The music and special effects Luhrmann used definitely helped pull the viewer into the film. The special effects added to the magical sense of Gatsby’ home, the lavishness of his parties, and the somewhat nauseating relationship between Gatsby and Daisy, which contributed greatly to the quality of the film.
